How to print a digital photograph at any lab
A photograph bought as a file is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of the better half: the print. Unlike a phone photo, a high resolution file was made to be enlarged, and the choices you make at the lab decide whether the place you loved arrives on the wall or merely arrives.
How big can it go
Print labs quote sharpness at 300 dots per inch. A file of about 3600 by 2400 pixels prints a crisp 30 by 20 centimetre sheet, and because a photograph is looked at from across the room rather than from reading distance, the same file holds a 50 by 70 centimetre print without strain. Photographs sold as editions are usually delivered larger still, so ask your lab for the file’s pixel dimensions and let them set the largest print that keeps 300 dpi. Trust your eyes at the counter over any chart.
Which lab
A neighbourhood lab prints the same day and lets you feel the paper before you pay; it is the right first stop for a standard sheet. An online fine-art printer keeps wider machines and pigment inks, which is what a large landscape wants: the process, usually called giclée, puts mineral pigment on cotton rag and outlives the wallpaper around it. Whichever you choose, ask for a proof if the file carries deep shadow, since the printer sees a screen your screen may not agree with.
Which paper
Matte cotton rag flatters landscape work: no glare from a window, grain that reads as weather rather than noise. Gloss and baryta papers suit street photographs, where a wet road or a lit sign gains from the shine. Frame behind glass only if the room is rough on walls; a Rag print can also sit unframed on a narrow baton, which keeps the object feeling like the photograph it is.
The licence you hold
A Cocochaplin edition is licensed for exactly this: printing and hanging the file in your own home, as large as your wall asks. It is one of twenty-five copies of that photograph, numbered to you, and once the edition closes the picture is retired and never sold again.
Cocochaplin is run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, the same hands that keep this guide beside the photographs themselves.
